WGC - CA Championship
Blustery winds mixed with rain to create very challenging scoring conditions as the World Golf Championship began play at Doral. Henrik Stenson and Robert Allenby top the first day leaderboard at five-under.

Tiger struggled on the greens again. The stroke and pace of his putts were spot on, but he couldn't seem to get the lines right, only sinking one putt over six feet all day. He finished two-under for the day.

Lefty struggled as well. Back to back double-bogeys early in his round left him scrambling to turn it around, but he finished the day five-over. Unless he catches fire tomorrow, it looks like the much hoped-for showdown between Mickelson and Woods will have to wait.

Q-school Finals Underway
from PGATour.com

LA QUINTA, Calif. – The PGA TOUR National Qualifying Tournament is not the most ideal spot to test a golfer’s game after rehabilitating from major surgery, but after one round it appears to be a perfect plan for Dennis Paulson.

Paulson shot a 1-under 71 on the Jack Nicklaus Course at PGA West in the first round of q-school after missing all of the 2006 season due to surgery on his left shoulder to repair a torn labrum and rotator cuff, as well as remove bone spurs.

Paul Azinger Named 2008 Ryder Cup Captain
The announcement came as no surprise for those who watched this weekend's Tour Championship which Adam Scott won by three strokes.

Despite choosing his words carefully while announcing the tourney, Zinger couldn't hide a knowing smile when tactfully avoiding stating anything concrete about today's forthcoming announcement.

His first order of business was to change the player selection process by making Ryder Cup eligibility points based off the PGA Tour season money list. Plus, he gets four captain's picks instead of two.

Nick Faldo will be captaining the 2008 European Ryder Cup team, which should make for some interesting banter between the two when they're co-announcing tourneys over the next two years.

The Next Golf Prodigy?

"If you're wondering who will rewrite the record book after Tiger Woods, 6-year-old Reece Campbell may be the answer. "

"He drives it as straight as 6 o'clock nearly every time. He plays consistently precise wedges tight to the hole. He rolls in 60-foot putts. Riding a spray of sand, his ball shoots up toward the hole, crawling to within inches. That's fine, leave him a tap-in—he'll broom it in one-handed like a Tour player and move on."

Beloved Golfer "Lord" Byron Nelson Dies at 94
His 18 victories in 1945, including 11 in a row, still stands as one of all sports' greatest streaks. He won 31 of 54 tournaments in 1944-45, competing against the golf greats Gene Sarazen, Ben Hogan and Sam Snead.

"Any time you make a record that stands for 55 years, you've done pretty good" Nelson told AP back in 2000, when Tiger Woods had won six straight.

Reknown for his epic, graceful swing and open approachability, Nelson was a model to which all golfers aspired. Arnold Palmer referred to him as 'one of the greatest players that ever lived.' Lord Nelson was a constant figure at The Masters, hitting the ceremonial first balls, and at The Byron Nelson Classic where he memorably sat on the porch and greeting golfers as they finished play.

The world of golf lost an outstanding player today — Mr. Nelson, you will be missed.

USA Only Scores Three Full-Point Victories In First Two Days; Must Overcome Large Deficit

Only six times in Ryder Cup history has a comeback been made, with the largest margin in Brookline from four in 1999, the next closest from two down by Europe in 1995, and Great Britian from two in 1957.

Watching the Europeans play the 36th Ryder Cup was like watching a highlight reel — seemingly every shot was amazing. They'd stick approach shots close out of tough lies and if they didn't put it close, they'd just walk up and sink putts from just about anywhere on the greens.

Europe has now won five out of the last six Ryder Cups. Colin Montgomery won the final match of his eight Cup, having played on every team since 1991. Comparisons were made that Darren Clarke is the Arnold Palmer of Europeans and Sergio Garcia the Jack Nicklaus, based on the way the galleries in Ireland responded to their every shot. The Irish crowd was certainly one of the best galleries in Ryder Cup history, truly appreciative of both the Americans and their favorite European players; not one of the antics from previous Cups was to be seen.

The crowds began chanting "Ole Ole" in unison as Darren Clarke finished his round; the emotion of the overall victory after the recent loss of his wife Heather became to much to bear as the tears ran down his cheeks. Every player and caddy at the hole shared their support for Darren, regardless of nationality. Close friend Tiger Woods also shared a supportive moment as they consoled and commisserrated and supported each other, both having lost a loved one this year.

On a happier note, Scott Verplank scored a hole-in-one on fourteen, for the first American ace in Ryder Cup history, and the second straight day with an ace on the most difficult par three at the K Club.

Start the countdown, only 726 days until the 2008 Ryder Cup!

Europeans Continue To Lead 2006 Ryder Cup at the K Club in Ireland

In true Irish fashion, rain and sun mixed throughout the day as Europe lead 7 1/2 to 4 1/2 after the morning fourball round, with Sergio Garcia's boundless enthusiasm, relaxed spirit and ever-ready smile seeming to lift the play of each of his partners. The US team managed only two wins in the first fifteen matches; the second day of play ended with Europe increasing its lead 10 to 6. It's going to take another Miracle at Brookline for the US to have a chance.

The top pairing for USA — Tiger Woods and Jim Furyk, numbers 1 and 3 in the world — did not score a birdie in the morning round today. Ironically, the four Ryder Cup rookies are playing better than some of the biggest names in American golf. Nearly every time the US team seemed to gather some momentum and gain an edge in a hole, the Euros would answer with a chip-in or by sinking a long putt to halve the hole. Add to that the fact that the US missed putt after putt, with the Euros holing out twice (including a hole-in-one by Paul Casey on the 223 yard par three fourteenth), and another European victory seems assured.

Several have noted that the Euros appeared much more cohesive as an overall team — exuding a greater sense of teamwork, comraderie, and clearly enjoying themselves more than USA. The Americans, it was noted, are less used to competing as a group, historically having been focused on individual achievements. Arnold Palmer mentioned that, albeit too late to be of use this year, if he were captain he would have focused the team on gelling together as a group.

U.S. Down 2.5 to 1.5 after first morning round of four ball at 2006 Ryder Cup

After starting strong followed by middling mediocrity, the U.S. team managed to claw it's way back from being down in every match to turn it around — lead by the pairing of Tiger and Furyk, who closed out their match 3-up — to finish out the morning round only a point behind.

Watching the matches, one cannot help but reflect back upon Johnny Miller's comments, yet still hope that they prove false as the Team heads in to the afternoon matches...

Miller Calls 2006 U.S. Ryder Cup Team "Worst Ever"

Johnny Miller stirred up a boiling pot of controversy by calling this year's Ryder Cup team the worst in history. Europe's 2006 team is very strong this year, while the U.S. team is playing four rookies.

The Golf Channel's Ryder Cup Preview Show had the announcers debating whether Miller's remarks were meant to be an impetus, a rallying point for the U.S. team — something to stoke the competitive fires in the young team... time will tell in two days, as the 2006 Ryder Cup begins play at the K Club in Straffan, County Kildare, Ireland.
