GolfServ has a great article on our new favorite Tour player, Bubba Watson titled "Here Comes Bubba: Long-hitting Watson quickly becoming Tour phenomenon"... check it out at: http://www.golfserv.com/gdc/news/article.asp?id=37464

As Gary McCord said during the broadcast, "It's like watching the C flight play at your home club's tournaments." As a C flighter, I was thinking the same thing - it was like watching the guys I play with all the time - ugly, ugly golf. Cursing, (almost) throwing clubs, missed three-footers, just imprecise play.

Despite the innate humor of watching some of the world's best play like a weekend duffer, the final round was an interesting sight to behold. The course played 7500 yards at sea-level, and I must admit to experiencing a kind of quiet and slightly smug enjoyment at watching the top pros struggle with the Torrey Pines course.

Still, I was a bit disappointed to see rookie Nathan Green hurry himself on the first playoff hole, overshooting the green and getting into trouble after the best drive of the bunch, throwing away his shot at victory. Neither Tiger nor Jose Maria are ones to play laxly when a win is within their grasp. Olazabal missed his short par putt on the par three sixteenth, handing Tiger the win. When Olazabal's putt missed, Tiger only smirked wryly, obviously disappointed in his own play.

The West Coast Swing continues Thursday with the FBR Open at the TPC of Scottsdale. Hopefully play will be better then.

After an unimpressive start, Tiger put good rounds together Friday and Saturday to start Sunday one shot back of co-leaders Sergio Garcia and Rod Pampling. With Green, Lefty, Jobe, Parnevik, Glover, Atwal and Clark rounding out the top ten (all within three shots of the leaders), today's final round is shaping up to be an all-star shootout!

Technology is an amazing thing. Not only does it keep providing us with better equipment to play this game we all love, but it couples with the media to completely shrink our planet.

Case in point: It's the end of January—just at the point where the daylight is staying long enough to inspire contemplations of hitting the range after work if it wasn't still so nasty cold outside—and the start of the West Coast Swing at Torrey Pines heralds the true arrival of the new golf season. Yet, thanks to the miracle of microwaves, I am watching LIVE coverage of round one of the Commercial Bank Qatar Masters—respendent with green grass and golf-shirt-clad players strutting their stuff halfway around the globe. What a great way to start a January day!

Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson headline this week's tournament - the Buick Invitational - and it's Tiger's 2006 debut. My how time flies... this will be his 10th season playing the Tour. Woods has eight top-ten finishes consisting of seven top-fives and three wins at the Buick, and Mickelson shares the exact same stats - the only difference is that Tiger did it in eight starts, whereas Lefty took thirteen. Regardless, it's going to be great to see these two go at it and hopefully we'll see them head-to-head on Sunday!

Bubba Watson is also scheduled to tee off nine minutes after Phil, at 10:09PT, so we won't have to wait long to get the chance to see how he holds up against two of the biggest guys in golf.

Lots of great golf on TV this weekend - Chad Campbell is leading the Bob Hope Chrysler Classic, the women are playing the World Cup in Sun City, and Chris DiMarco won the Abu Dhabi Golf Championship. With the local weather being rather cold this weekend, good thing we can fulfill our golf fixes all weekend!

The PGA Tour website (www.pgatour.com) has FREE video highlights and articles available on their site. Watching their ads, it appears this may be for a limited time, so be sure to check 'em out soon. They also have audio features and recaps - nice if you missed some coverage. www.pgatour.com also has a Fantasy Golf league/games going on

David Toms pretty much walked away with the Sony Open, finishing with a several shot lead. But the story of the weekend wasn't Toms, or even Michelle Wie (who had an ugly round Thursday, followed by a great round Friday but still missed the cut)... no, the real story lies with Bubba Watson.

If you watched the event, you were priveleged enough to see Bubba's Tour debut bombing drives 380+ yards!! Not only is he long, but he's accurate - hitting 11 of 14 fairways Sunday and finishing #2 for the weekend in Greens-In-Regulation. It doesn't look like he's playing this week at the Bob Hope Chrysler Classic, but I know I'll be looking forward to watching his outstanding play this year!

The Aloha 2006 season continues this week with the Sony Open in Hawaii. ESPN is covering it in prime-time, which is nice since that gives me the opportunity to watch it live. Rory Sabbatini is the first-round leader at five under, and my boy Joe Ogilvie is looking to be in good shape at one over...

What a golf shot! In a sudden-death playoff, Stuart Appleby (or "Stewie", as I like to call him) hit an amazing shot out of the bunker to a virtual tap-in putt to win his third consecutive Mercedes Championship. Nicely done, Stewie.

The West Coast Swing continues Thursday in Hawaii again (rough, eh?), with the Sony Open. ESPN will continue to bring prime-time coverage of all four days.

I'm particularly going to be rooting for Joe Ogilvie, the cousin of a friend of mine. He's been consistently improving over the years, almost getting his first win last year. Here's hoping he gets it soon!

Aloha 2006! The Mercedes Championships are underway in Kapalua, Hawaii and Stewart Appleby is positioned to win is third consecutive title. Be sure to catch the action on ESPN starting at 7pm Eastern!!
