The Champion Golfer of the Year!!

Tiger Woods put on a clinic today, despite getting put on the clock for slow play mid-round, to win the 2006 Open Championship at Royal Liverpool in Hoylake. Protestors of something or another bombarded the 18th green with purple dye just before he hit his final approach shot. As Ian Bake Finch said, "That'll really help your cause."

Sergio Garcia, who was in the final pairing with Tiger, opened the day at four-over, and was either unaccustomed or unable to deal with the pressure of playing with Tiger. He came back a bit at the end to finish at one over on the day.

Chris Dimarco played an inspired final round, giving no quarter to Woods, especially in the final few holes. If Tiger erred, Dimarco was there. Ernie Els wasn't able to put anything together today, it seemed, as he essentially maintained his relative position throughout the day.

Tiger now has eleven Majors in his bag (fourteen if you count the three Amateur Championships) tying Walter Hagen for the most number of Majors won by a professional — second only to Jack Nicklaus' 18 Majors won.

Today Tiger cut another notch in his victory belt, winning by one stroke over the field, securing back-to-back wins at the British Open (the first time since Tom Watson did it in 82-83) and becoming The Champion Golfer of the Year.

Congrats to Justin Leonard and family on the birth of his new son, Luke. Justin missed the Championship to be with his wife for their latest addition.

Woods ekes out lead by one, paired with Garcia for final round

Tiger played what could only be described as a mediocre round at best today, holing a birdie putt on the eighteenth hole to maintain his one-shot lead heading into the final round of the 135th British Open tomorrow.

Neither Woods nor Els played spectacular golf today, both barely maintaining their overnight positions, while Garcia and DiMarco put on stellar shows of golfing prowess to move up the leaderboard into the final two pairings.

Tomorrow's final round looks to be another thriller, with the final pairing of Tiger Woods and Sergio Garcia making up the final round for the first time since Medina. Play well, fellas! And, give us the show we all want to see.

Tiger Runs Away, Ernie Chases, Phil Struggles

Tiger Woods took off on today's round at The Open Championship, holing out his second shot for eagle on the fourteenth hole. His game plan was the same as it usually is for the links courses across the pond - tee off with a club other than driver, leave the ball short of the trouble bunkers, fire irons at the pins. He finished the day 12-under, with Ernie Els' 11-under being the only other score close. Phil just couldn't get his putter working all day, shooting par after par—every time he looked at the leaderboard, he was further down.

Ernie played in the more challenging conditions later in the afternoon; Saturday's round should be a great match between himself and Tiger!

Lehman Returns, Faldo Fumbles, and Tiger Eagles Eighteen

Ten years after his last Open victory, Ryder Cup Captain Tom Lehman didn't let the good-natured banter from future opponents from across the pond get to his game. Lehman completed his round with no bogeys and four birdies, putting him in the running at four under.

Faldo wasn't able to take advantage of the great scoring conditions today, ending his round at +5 for the day. Perhaps it was the Tiger throng that threw him off, although some may argue there was an underlying tension between Nick and Tiger due to comments made earlier in the week. However, Faldo insisted that they'd shaken hands and all was forgotten, so who knows.

Tiger sunk a big putt for eagle on the 18th hole, putting him one shot off first-round leader Graeme McDowell at five under par. Given the enthusiastic fist pump upon sinking the putt, Tiger's game looks to be on and we should be in for a great weekend show!

Play Begins At The British Open
This week marks the beginning of the British Open at Royal Liverpool, Hoylake, England. The course hasn't seen an Open since 1967, longer than many of today's pros have been alive.

Tiger is quoted as saying, "I haven't been there, haven't seen any photos of it. All I know is it's in Liverpool." Tiger will be paired with Faldo at 2.09pm on Thursday to begin his defense of the title.

From watching the preview shows, the course looks challenging—and certainly is a links course much unlike the landscaped marvels in the U.S. Hello wind, brown grass and tall gorse!

Yesterday, John Senden knocked it stiff on 18 to maintain his one-shot lead, and take his first PGA Tour victory at the John Deere Classic. Congrats!

U.S. Women's Open Tied - 18 hole Playoff

Following the 36-hole playing marathon yesterday, Annika Sorenstam and Pat Hurst remained tied for the lead at Newport Country Club in Newport, Rhode Island.

After 15 holes, Sorenstam is leading -1 to Hurst's +4 — Annika started with a birdie and hasn't been over par thus far in the round and is in fine shape to win her second tournament this year.
