Ready for golf playoffs? Say hello to the FedEx Cup!

Starting next year, PGA TOUR golf will have it's own playoff system with the debut of the FedExCup in 2007. Tim Finchem released the points structure and playoff system for next year's inaugural season today.

Players accumulate points through the regular 33-week season, and then will compete in the four Playoff events - the Barclays Classic, the Deutsche Bank Championship, the BMW Championship and THE TOUR Championship. (If you didn't realize golf truly is a global sport, take note that only one of the above Playoff events is sponsored by a U.S.-based company.) Not only will the FedEx Cup champion gain fame and glory, he'll also be presented with a nice check for $10 million.

Geoff Ogilvy wins the 106th U.S. Open

Phil Mickelson needed par on the 18th hole at Winged Foot to win, but after he drove his ball way left (a slice for Lefty) he tried another miracle recovery shot similar to the one he pulled off on 17. Unfortunately, this time his ball hit a tree squarely and bounced back for a net gain of maybe 20 yards. His third shot landed in the greenside bunker—with a fried-egg lie. His out shot flew the green, leaving him needing to hole out a nasty 30-yard chip to secure a playoff spot. He missed.

"I think I was the beneficiary of a little bit of charity. I think I got a bit lucky,'' Ogilvy said, after watching from the scorer's tent. Phil could have taken a 2-iron or 3-wood off the tee, played it safe and likely continued his recent major dominance. But Lefty doesn't like to play it safe...

Lefty's Dancing at the U.S. Open !

Once Phil got that monkey off his back about being the "best player to never win a major", he's just gone on a tear. Tied for a one-stroke lead at two over par, Phil is going for three majors in a row and the penultimate chapter of his grand slam. And, for the first time in 32 years, the leader going into Sunday is over par.

Lefty's paired with England’s Kenneth Ferrie in today's final group. The Europeans are out in force this week as well, playing very well on a course that is making the pros look like amateurs—yesterday someone (who shall remain nameless for the sake of common decency) was in the deep stuff, pulled out a rescue club and stepped into his swing like a batter at the plate. Not only did his foot move about six inches, but he topped the ball and it only rolled about 10 yards up the fairway. While I don't wish that on anyone, it was nice to be reminded that the pros are human too.

Colin Montgomeris is hanging in there at three back, and is arguably the next fan favorite after Phil this week. Monty's never won a major, despite coming close on several occasions, and those of us who've watched his efforts over the years can't help but pull for him.

Second round leader Steve Stricker is joined by Vijay Singh, Ian Poulter and Aussie Geoff Ogilvie in the final groups for what is sure to be one of the most exciting, most international, final rounds ever!

Happy Birthday Phil!

Phil Mickelson turned 36 today, and gave himself an early birthday present yesterday with an even-par round of 70 at Winged Foot, tied for second place with the likes of Steve Stricker, Jim Furyk, David Howell and Miguel Jiminez.

Colin Montgomerie was the first round leader, shooting a one-under 69 to lead the field into Friday. It's nice to see Monty, who historically has had issues with the majors in the US, starting well.

Tiger had a miserable day yesterday, shooting 7-over. Nothing clicked for him all day, especially after starting bogey-bogey-bogey. He is finishing up his second round now, and desperately needs some birdies to make the cut and play the weekend. Good luck to all!

It's Open Season!!!!
After much anticipation, the U.S. Open is finally upon us! Tiger has returned to golf after mourning the passing of his father Earl, and will attempt another major victory. When Tiger was a boy, he and his father used to play golf every Father's Day and then hurry home to catch the back nine of the Open.

While winning any major is always an emotional event for the victor, should Tiger win this weekend, it will likely be the most bittersweet victory of them all.

Golfweb has a great article, read it here... and let the game begin!

Michelle Wie barely missed qualifying for the 2006 U.S. Open, finishing 59th out of 153 players making the attempt. Only the top 18 qualified, and Wie's 1-over for 36 holes put her five shots out.

Still, not a bad showing for a 16 year old. It's only a matter of time for her.
