| Arrive in Los Angeles - Wednesday, October 5, 2005 |
The 8am wake-up call came too soon. I dozed a bit, before showering and returning to my bed to break out the laptop and see if the wifi access worked as advertised. I fired off a few quick emails before hitting the road at 10:20.
A realization had been simmering in my subconscious throughout the drive, briefly popping into the back of my mind before submersing itself wherever the subconsious goes and hides itself. This journey seems to be about time. Time travel. Not only am I gaining an hour as I cross into the Pacific Time Zone but, thanks to Einstein, I am also aging more slowly due to being in motion. Perhaps these thoughts were the result of my occasional upward glances into infinity the night before. Perhaps they were a by-product of my not knowing what time zone I was in. I suspect they were brought on because I had been listening to the Douglas Adams audio book Mostly Harmless for the past eight hours. Maybe it was just being in Utah.
I passed Vegas somewhere around 2pm, Denver time. I called Peter to let him know where I was and approximate when I'd be arriving. Then I drove through the vast wastelandish deserts of eastern Nevada and western California. Arnold Schwarzenegger's line from the commercial "Welcome to Caleefornia" echoed as I drove on. "Ummm, yeah" I thought, "not so nice."
Coming down the mountains into San Bernadino, I see what at first glance appears to be a mushroom cloud from an atomic bomb. It doesn't quite have the right shape, so no panic ensued, and I quickly realized it was yet another of the wildfires that have regularly plagued southern California. I snap a picture.
I make it to Pete's house in Burbank at 5:20, Caleefornia time. Wired, tired, excited to be here, I catch up with Roe and Cassidy while we wait for Peter to get home from work. It's a delight to see everyone again! Cassidy, who just turned twelve, is in the seventh grade now. My how she's grown into a wonderful little lady. Again I am reminded of the passage of time.
Pete and I go sit on the front lawn and sip root beers while Roe cooks dinner and their tiny poodle Sahara terrorizes passers by. They've lived in here for about six years now. It's a nice place in a nice neighborhood - they know their neighbors, their mailman, and even run into their old mailman on occasion - it just oozes pleasantness. It's quite peaceful, and I barely notice the occasional jet flying into nearby Burbank Airport.
The house is smaller than I remember it. A nice front yard, but what little back yard there is is surrounded by apartments. A small house filled with smallish people (Peter is the tallest at about 5' 7") I feel a bit like a bull in a china shop. What a difference from the vast open space of Colorado, everything here seems a bit cramped... or maybe I'm just bigger than I realized.
